A Journey through the Ether in the Words of H.H. Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi

By Sahaj Yog 2.0 Team under leadership of Alka Gupta ji | Sahaja Yoga Practitioner | Spiritual Wellness Advocate

In a world increasingly overwhelmed by distraction and stress, meditation has become a sanctuary. But true meditation, as revealed by Her Holiness Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, Founder of Sahaja Yoga, goes far beyond relaxation. It is a divine journey, a sacred ascent that begins with Self-realisation and leads beyond even the Sahasrara chakra into the ethereal realms of the Spirit.

Let us explore, in Shri Mataji’s own words, the importance of deep meditation and the experiential ascent beyond the Sahasrara — into what She called the higher subtle chakras of pure Divinity.

The True Purpose of Meditation

“To develop, one must meditate. Important thing is to meditate every day; every day; every day… you must meditate every day. That’s an important point.”
 — Hindi Nirmlanjali, Hindi_Nirmlanjali

Shri Mataji emphasized that daily meditation is essential not just to maintain our connection with the Divine, but to go deeper — to evolve.

Sahasrara: The Gateway to Divine Union

On May 5, 1970, Shri Mataji opened the Sahasrara Chakra of the Universe. This historic event made it possible for people all over the world to attain Self-realisation and experience the direct connection with the all-pervading energy — Paramchaitanya.

Yet this is not the end of the journey.

“After coming to Sahaja Yoga and after your Sahasrara has opened, you have to pass through these four Chakras: Ardha-bindu, Bindu, Valaya and Pradakshina. After passing through these four Chakras only, can you say that you have become a Sahaja Yogi.”
 — Sahasrara Puja, Mumbai, 5 May 1983SY Mantra Book

The Chakras Beyond Sahasrara

These four higher chakras belong to the etheric realm, beyond physicality. Shri Mataji described them as:

  • Ardha-bindu – the gateway of surrender
  • Bindu – the point of complete integration
  • Valaya – the divine halo, or circle
  • Pradakshina – the state of circumambulation around the Divine

These are not concepts — they are states of spiritual consciousness achievable through deep, Sahaj meditation.

What Happens in Deep Meditation?

In this ethereal zone:

  • Thought ceases
  • The Sahasrara opens wider
  • One feels divine vibrations more strongly
  • One becomes the witness (Sakshi) of the universal play
  • A merging with the Divine occurs
“When you are in thoughtless awareness, then the vibrations increase and your Sahasrara opens more. And then you rise above the Sahasrara into the realm of collective consciousness.”
 — Sahasrara Puja, 1985 (ref. The Light of the World)
“When you meditate deeply, you go beyond the Sahasrara, into a space which is full of vibrations, peace, and joy. You start feeling the presence of the Divine in everything. This is the real state of yoga.”
 — Sydney Public Program, 1990【referenced in Sahaj Gyan Pradip and Nirmala Vidya archive】

The Guru Principle Takes You Further

“Then the Guru within you starts to rise. It is the Guru who takes you beyond Sahasrara, through Ardha-bindu and into total silence.”
 — Guru Puja, Italy, 1988 (ref. Sahaj Bramhavidya)

In deep meditation, the inner Guru awakens and becomes the guide into the most subtle domains of the Self.

A Word of Caution: No Forcing the Ascent

Shri Mataji cautioned seekers not to force the ascent through techniques or imagination. Ascent happens only through pure desire, surrender, and grace.

“You cannot reach God by effort. It has to be through surrender, love, and the grace of your own Kundalini.”
 — Meta Modern Era, Chapter 9Meta Modern Era

Signs of Higher Ascent

You may be entering higher states when:

  • You feel deep inner silence
  • You are completely detached, yet fully compassionate
  • Cool vibrations flow from the top of your head continuously
  • You witness divine activity without reacting
  • You are effortlessly in joy
“You become the total instrument of the Divine, and there is no more ‘you’ left — only the Divine acts through you.”
 — Talk on Collectivity, 1983 (ref. Joy of Spreading)

Conclusion: A Journey Beyond Words

Shri Mataji’s vision was not to create another system of belief, but to awaken the divine within, and to guide humanity Ascent Beyond Sahasrara into the Kingdom of God — the realm of truth, joy, and eternal silence.

“Meditation is the only way you can grow… because when you meditate, you are in silence; you are in thoughtless awareness. Then the growth of awareness takes place.”
 — Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, Nirmala Vidya CollectionNirmala Vidya 2019

Final Reflection

The journey beyond Sahasrara is not theoretical. It is real, living, and available to each of us — through Shri Mataji’s grace, and through daily, sincere meditation. Let us not stop at awakening. Let us rise to become the instrument of the Divine.
